The chief executive of the Irish Medicines Board, which regulates the sale of medicinal products here, has been appointed to a top job at EU level.
Pat O'Mahony has been appointed chairman of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for a three-year period, the Department of Health announced today.
Minister for Health Mary Harney said she was delighted to learn of Mr O'Mahony's appointment from yesterday.
"This is not only a tribute to him personally and professionally but it also recognises the high standing of the IMB at European level. I extend my sincerest congratulations to him and wish him all the best in this new position," she said.
Based in London, the EMEA was established in 1995 to harmonise the medicines control functions of the EU member states.
