THE husband of Mrs Patricia Murphy, found strangled behind a skip near her home off Griffith Avenue, Dublin, almost a year ago, was charged yesterday with her murder.

Mr David Murphy (34), of Goldsmith Street, Phibsboro, Dublin, appeared in Dublin District Court at about 3 p.m., shortly after his arrest by gardai.

Det Sgt Tom McCarrick, who was heading the investigation, told the court that Mr Murphy was arrested at his home around lunchtime and he had taken him to Whitehall Garda station.

Det Sgt McCarrick said that when Mr Murphy was charged with his wife's murder, and cautioned, he had replied "not guilty".

The court was told the defendant was currently unemployed. Mr Murphy's solicitor made an application for legal aid, which was granted.

Mr Murphy was remanded in custody to Mountjoy Prison for a week.

Although there was no application yesterday for bail, his solicitor indicated that an application to the High Court would be made.

The partially clothed body of Mrs Murphy (34) was discovered, behind a skip by workmen at a building site off Griffith Avenue on the morning of May 28th.

A post mortem examination, showed she had been strangled but not sexually assaulted.

A native of Kilrush, Co Clare she was the mother of four young children.

Mr Murphy was questioned previously about his wifes murder and last September challenged his detention under Section 10 of the Criminal Justice Act before the High Court.

After a three hour inquiry into, the legality of his arrest, the court held that his constitutional rights had not been breached.

While the application was being heard the time allowed for his detention elapsed.
