Snooker star Alex Higgins yesterday discharged himself from the hospital where he was being treated for stab wounds after an incident involving a woman.

The 47-year-old former World Champion was taken to Hope Hospital, Salford, Greater Manchester, with wounds to the right arm and abdomen.

But two hours later, and against medical advice, he walked out.

Police found Higgins injured after being called to an incident at the house in Swinton at 8 a.m.

A 34-year-old woman was arrested and was to be interviewed later yesterday. Higgins is believed to stay occasionally in a caravan in the garden of the two-bedroomed house owned by a woman in Conway Avenue.

He told a court earlier this year that he was jobless and relying on friends to support him.

Police said Higgins, formerly known on the snooker circuit as "Hurricane", had first refused to go to hospital but was persuaded that he needed treatment because of the amount of blood he had lost. They said Higgins's wounds were not serious.
