Luanda - The Angolan army waged a major offensive yesterday against a stronghold of the rebel UNITA movement, which said the town of Bailundo in central Angola had been virtually destroyed and hundreds of civilians killed. Speaking on Portugal's TSF radio, Mr Carlos Morgado of UNITA accused government forces of using napalm, phosphorous bombs, chemical weapons and defoliants in the fighting. But he denied reports that the rebel headquarters in the region had fallen. The Angolan government meanwhile maintained silence on claims by a senior diplomat in Luanda that its troops had captured Bailundo.
