THE controversial Limerick city borough boundary extension claim, which was first submitted 22 years ago, is to be considered by the Government under new legislation. Limerick and Clare county councils are opposing the proposed extension.

The Minister for the Environment, Mr Howlin, has told Limerick County Council that he will bring in an order to put into effect the boundary provisions of the Local Government Act 1991.

Once that is in place, a committee will be set up to make recommendations. "You will have a strong voice in this," he told the councillors, adding that "not all conflicting demands can be met". Arrangements will be phased in, but you can be assured that no borough boundary by ministerial order will be signed over your heads".

Mr Howlin said he would like to see a rational agreement being reached between adjoining local authorities.

Mr Matt Callaghan, the council chairman, said: "We will be strongly opposed to any proposed extension. We have suffered in the past by our proximity to Limerick city and any proposed extension would have far reaching effects for us."
