Nearly 290,000 of them were vacant on census night – a vacancy rate of 14.5 per cent.

Leitrim had the highest overall vacancy rate, with over 30 per cent of homes not occupied. Donegal was next, with a vacancy rate of 29 per cent.

In total, there were 1,649,408 private households in permanent housing units in the State. Some 54 per cent of these (895,149) are in Leinster, with just over 27 per cent in Munster, 12 per cent in Connacht and 6 per cent in Ulster.

Over 34 per cent of homes are owned outright, with 35 per cent owned with a mortgage or loan. Some 28.8 per cent of homes are rented, the figures show.

A total of 26.5 per cent of homes have individual septic tanks, while 66 per cent are in a public sewage scheme.
