Leitrim's first community radio station starts broadcasting to morrow morning from Manorhamilton and will stay on air for three days over the bank holiday weekend.

Radio Lunasa has been set up in the kitchen of the Glen Centre and, while a dishwasher and a microwave may look slightly out of place beside a mixing desk, the quality of programming is assured.

The manager of the Glen Centre, Ms Liz Culloty, said a huge community effort had gone into the preparation of programmes which will run from Saturday to Monday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The schedule includes topical magazine programmes on issues such as rural transport, music programmes for different tastes, chat shows and features on various community groups.

A number of older people have also got involved to make a programme, Manorhamilton As It Was.

Ms Culloty said Radio Lunasa was a pilot project funded by the EU's peace and reconciliation fund. If successful it was hoped to run a community radio on a permanent basis for a couple of days each week.

Six women from different groups in Leitrim have been receiving training over the past year.

Radio Lunasa will broadcast on 104.4 FM and anybody having problems tuning into the station should ring 072-55864.
