Hope fades for missing fishermen

Hopes were fading last night of finding two missing fishermen alive after their boat was wrecked along the coast of Co Down.

Hopes were fading last night of finding two missing fishermen alive after their boat was wrecked along the coast of Co Down.

Wreckage of the Greenhill was found just north of Ardglass yesterday. Later the main hull was located.

The vessel got into trouble and was forced by heavy seas and strong winds on to rocks near Ardglass at about 8pm on Thursday.

A distress signal, activated when the Greenhill got into difficulties, was picked up by the Coast Guard.

A rescue operation was then launched. One crew member, thought to be the skipper, was rescued from a life raft by the crew of the Portaferry lifeboat and taken to hospital in Downpatrick suffering from hypothermia. However, two others, one from Downpatrick and the other from Ballinahinch, are still missing.

The missing men were named locally as Conor Bogues, Ballinahinch, and Donal Gibson, Downpatrick. Mr Gibson's family said they hoped he would still be found and thanked rescue workers for their efforts.

Hundreds of people joined the search yesterday, including members of the RNLI, the Coast Guard, the PSNI and an Irish rescue helicopter from Dublin.

However, the search was hampered by strong winds and rough conditions.

Brett Cunningham, area operations manager for fisheries protection, said: "There is no doubt the boat hit the rocks. The chances of finding the men are ever decreasing."

According to Richard Newell of the rescue centre in Belfast, the rescued man was discharged from the Downe Hospital in Downpatrick after treatment.

"The Portaferry lifeboat located a life raft with one person aboard from the missing fishing vessel," Mr Newell said.

"The casualty informed the lifeboat crew that there were a further two fishermen aboard the vessel."
