The Coombe Women's Hospital in Dublin has started the State's first HIV screening service for pregnant women.
With appropriate treatment, the chances of infection from mother to baby are reduced by more than two-thirds.
Special counselling services are offered to mothers before screening, with additional counselling where necessary.
