World number one Lleyton Hewitt began the new season with an unconvincing win over Roger Federer in the Hopman Cup.

Hewitt overcame a lack of concentration in the second set to defeat Switzerland's Federer in his first competitive game in preparation for the forthcoming Australian Open in Melbourne.

Hewitt's 6-3 0-6 6-4 win gave Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie after fellow Adelaide youngster Alicia Molik beat Miroslava Vavrinec 6-3 6-4 in the first match.

Hewitt struggled with his serve in the second set, with Federer breaking three times, but the Aussie recovered in the final set to take the match in 105 minutes.
