Tennis:  Lleyton Hewitt breezed into the second round of the US Open with a straight-sets victory over American Amer Delic.

Hewitt, seeded 16, needed just 97 minutes to sweep past Delic in a 6-2 6-4 6-2 win, claiming an impressive 37 out of 39 points on his first serve.

The 2001 champion is playing his third tournament of the summer under new coach and compatriot Tony Roche.

Both previous events ended in defeats to Roche's former charge Roger Federer.

In the women's singles, Svetlana Kuznetsova began her bid to regain the title in impressive fashion with a quickfire victory over Klara Zakopalova.

Russia's Kuznetsova, seeded fourth, was the surprise champion in 2004 when she defeated compatriot Elena Dementieva but crashed out in the first round when she returned to defend the title in 2005.

Having already reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this summer, the world number four is confident of a good showing here, particularly after winning the warm-up event in New Haven last week.

And she took just 64 minutes to dispatch Zakopalova of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-3 in the first match on the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Patty Schnyder (11) and Nicole Vaidisova (13) were among the other early winners on day two in New York.

Schnyder eased past Iveta Benesova 6-3 6-0, while Vaidisova, playing her first match since Wimbledon, was also an easy winner against Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-1 6-2 the scoreline.

One seed to go out was Tathiana Garbin, the Italian 23rd seed going down 6-4 6-3 to Dominika Cibulkova, of Slovakia.
