Heavy rains and flash flooding has forced the temporary closure of Cork University Hospital's A&E Department.

The Southern Health Board this evening advised people seeking A&E services to go to Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria Hospital or to visit their local GP.

Earlier continuous heavy rains led to traffic congestion and delays for motorists in Cork city and county as Gardai and local authorities reported surface water flooding on several important roads.

According to Met Eireann at Cork Airport, some 20mm of rain fell between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the airport's observational station while they expected that it was even heavier in other parts.
