There will be an ongoing threat of flooding today because of heavy rainfall experienced in some parts of the country yesterday.

Winds of up to 110 km/h and heavy rain resulted in flooding in some parts of the country and, although conditions were expected to improve overnight, further stormy weather is forecast over the weekend. The worst weather is expected on Sunday when damaging southwest and southerly gusts will reach between 110 and 140 km/h throughout the country.

Connacht, west Munster and south Leinster were worst affected by the adverse conditions yesterday, with parts of Cork and Kerry experiencing up to 50mm of rainfall. In Kerry, strong gusts of wind and heavy rain led to fallen trees and flooded roads. A number of minor car crashes resulting directly from weather conditions were reported to gardaí and ESB crews were tackling fallen branches and power line damage. A large tree obstructed the Listowel Ballybunion road early yesterday.

On the Kerry-Cork border, stormy conditions blew a car off the road, according to an account to gardaí yesterday morning. The driver, a woman, was removed to Kerry General Hospital, though her injuries were not thought to be serious.
