Yerevan - Armenia's Catholicos Garegin I, who died yesterday of cancer aged 66, presided over one of the world's most ancient Christian churches but he was no cloistered recluse.

Born in Syria and educated at Oxford, Garegin headed the 1,700-year-old church showing the influences of a man who spent most of his life outside Armenia.
