West Ham are said to be preparing a bid for Republic of Ireland and Wimbledon striker David Connolly, according to reports in the British tabloids today.

The 26-year-old had looked to be on his way to Reading in a £500,000 sterling move, but failing to agree personal terms has allowed the Hammers' to make their approach.

If successful, it would be West Ham's first signing of the summer ahead of a new season in the Nationwide Division One.

In a summer clear-out, manager Glenn Roeder off-loaded 10 out-of-contract players, while selling Glen Johnson to Chelsea and Trevor Sinclair to Man City.

It is believed Roeder thinks Connolly would be ideal cover for Freddie Kanoute and Jermaine Defoe, who have indicated their desire to leave the London club following relegation last season.
