The FBI was alerted after customers began receiving threatening emails from the hackers, showing their credit card details.

The group uses the name Ingreslock 1524 and says it has "big plans" for the information.

A Playboy spokesperson said that the breach took place last weekend, but only became after apparent after the hackers publicised their attack.

According to CNN each of email lists its recipients name, credit card number and expiry date.

There is also a promise to run up $10 million worth of fraudulent transactions.

Playboy has responded by sending letters to all its customers advising them to check to see whether there have been any unauthorised charges. It says it is yet to determine precisely how many of their customers are affected.

The company added that a firm of private investigators has been hired to look into the incident.
