DISSIDENT REPUBLICAN Alan Ryan died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds, Dublin Coroner’s Court heard.
Ryan (32) from Grange Abbey Drive in Donaghmede, Dublin, was gunned down on the street at Grange Lodge Avenue in Clongriffin, north Dublin, on September 3rd. The father of one was on bail awaiting charges at the time of his death.
At the opening of the inquest, Det Insp Séamus Boland said the Garda’s homicide investigation into the incident was ongoing.
A person was due to appear before the courts to be charged with an offence related to the investigation, he said.
This was not a homicide charge, he said.
Another person remained in Garda custody and was being questioned, said Det Insp Boland.
Ryan’s body was identified by his brother, Anthony Ryan, at the Dublin City Mortuary on September 5th, two days after the death.
The court heard that the autopsy had already been carried out by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy when the identification took place.
Det Insp Boland said this was due to the circumstances of the shooting.
A decision was made in conjunction with the State Pathologist’s office that, given the nature of the incident, the autopsy should take place as soon as possible, he said.
Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the inquest for further mention to March 8th next year, while the Garda investigation is under way.
