The Garda have recovered two guns which may have been used in shootings between feuding gangs in Limerick, it emerged today.
Detectives said the discovery of a Browning automatic and a Beretta semi-automatic firearm at the side of a canal in the Ball's Bridge area was significant.
A spokesman said the find could reveal clues to recent attacks between two gangs in Limerick which began after a murder last year.
"The weapons were found by a member of the Garda Siochana who was carrying out an inquiry into a separate incident," he said.
"We believe this find to be significant as part of the ongoing investigation into a feud between two groups in Limerick over the last 12 months.
"We have to carry out ballistic checks before we can confirm that they were involved in a number of recent attacks."
But he added: "Spent cartridges were found at the scene of other incidents and they belong to weapons of a similar kind to those found."
