Two people, including a senior leader of Bangladesh's main opposition Awami League, were shot dead in the southern city of Khulna today.

Mr Manzurul Imam (58) was killed instantly by unidentified gunmen armed with explosives as he boarded a rickshaw outside his home. Three people were wounded, including the rickshaw driver who died later in hospital.

Mr Imam was a lawyer and principal of Khulna Law College.

Violence erupted in Khulna after the deaths, with protesters damaging vehicles and forcing many shops and offices to close, witnesses said. They said protesters ransacked an office of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
