A Palestinian man was shot and killed by gunfire from a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip today, just 24 hours after a ceasefire between the Palestinian Authority and Israel.

Palestinian witnesses said the 20-year-old from Rafah refugee camp in southern Gaza was shot from the nearby Atzmona settlement. An Israeli army garrison is based in the settlement and many of the residents are armed.

A Hamas militant was killed while preparing a bomb in the Gaza Strip, sources with the Islamic group said. Hamas has said it is not bound by the truce, but will continue to maintain a calm spell at the behest of Abbas.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced a ceasefire at a summit in Egypt yesterday aimed at ending four years of bloodshed.
