More than 40 people were evacuated from a Cork city hotel after a fire broke out early this morning.

More than 40 people were evacuated from a Cork city hotel after a fire broke out early this morning.

A fireman also suffered minor injuries when tackling the fire in Victoria Hotel on Marlborough Street, off Patrick Street.

The fire was contained to one bedroom on the top floor of the three-storey landmark building.

The fire, which broke out around 6am, was brought under control within 20 minutes, and no guests suffered injuries. They were allowed to return to their rooms two hours later.

The fireman, who was treated in hospital for heat burn, has since been released. Gardaí are investigating the cause of the fire.

Built in 1810 the Victoria Hotel is the oldest hotel in Cork City.
