Kabul - The Afghan opposition paid a somewhat grudging tribute yesterday to weeks of US bombing but attributed most of the credit for the fall of Kabul to internal opposition.

"It's true that the international alliance had been carrying out scattered bombardment in different parts of the country but compared to the people's uprising the American bombardment was not that effective," Younis Qanooni, interior minister in a former Afghan government, told AFP.

"The US bombing was appreciated but the main job was done by our own people," Mr Qanooni added.

Analysts attributed the Taliban collapse to low morale caused by weeks of devastating US air attacks.
