The Oughterard Community Council in Co Galway is examining the possibility of purchasing 271 acres of lakes near the town to prevent the lakes being bought for fish-farming.

The privately-owned lakes are part of the Corrib drainage system. They are located close to the main Galway-Clifden road near Oughterard and include Lough Bofin, where the "Quiet Man Bridge" is located.

A German national has owned the lakes for the past 30 years and they have been maintained and stocked to a high standard. They are being sold by Oughterard auctioneers Spencer O'Toole, who are seeking offers in excess of £120,000 for the 271 acres of lakes.
