ROME - Police found an unexploded second World War hand grenade near the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence yesterday as Italy went on alert following an intelligence report that Islamic extremists may be planning attacks.

The grenade, spotted in the courtyard of a building by the river Arno by a local resident, was removed by bomb disposal experts and blown up in a controlled explosion, police said.
