Barack Obama’s move to cap the salaries of executives at financial institutions receiving government assistance should be replicated in Ireland, the Green Party has said.

Party finance spokesman Dan Boyle said "I want to see legislative changes that will extend State regulation of these professions….auditors and accountants must take their responsibilities far more seriously".

Mr Boyle said the Green Party wanted limits on executive pay to be part of Government measures to achieve economic recovery.

"The Government will only enjoy the support of the general public if it is fair, if it leads by example, if it introduces reforms to ensure that bad and reckless practices will not be repeated," the Senator added.
