Two of the 12 British plane-spotters held for more than a month in Greek prisons on spying charges were released on bail today.

Two Dutchmen in the group of 14 were released earlier. It was not immediately clear why the nine other Britons in Nafplio prison were not released at the same time. A British woman member of the group was awaiting release from an Athens prison.

Mr Paul Coppin, head of the plane-spotting group Touchdown Tours, and Mr Wayne Groves left Nafplio prison smiling after 37 days in detention.

Earlier Dutchmen Mr Frank Mink and Mr Patrick Dirksen had left the prison for a local police station where they were to be formally set free.

The 14 plane-spotters were arrested on November 8th and accused of spying after allegedly taking forbidden photographs at a military airbase in southern Greece. All deny the charge.

A Greek judge earlier this week reduced the charge from spying to the misdemeanour of holding national secrets, and he set bail.
