The name of the architects chosen to redevelop the 70-acre site for the new DIT campus at Grangegorman in north inner-city Dublin is expected to be announced today by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
The campus will comprise a mix of university buildings, medical facilities and student accommodation.
At the moment, DIT's faculties and offices are spread across the city on about 30 sites. The new project will involve relocating most of them to Grangegorman.
The Grangegorman Development Agency, chaired by former Dublin city manager John Fitzgerald, ran an international design competition for the redevelopment last March asking for: "a visionary, world-class master plan for the Grangegorman site, which meets the requirements of the Dublin Institute of Technology and the HSE".
The winner was decided five weeks ago but all those involved have been told to keep the news secret. By a process of eliminating those who were told they did not win, it is widely tipped that joint entrants DMOD Architects (Duffy Mitchell O'Donoghue) and US firm Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners have won the contract.
Grangegorman is the site of the oldest public psychiatric hospital in Ireland. The site also includes large open spaces, some churches and the remains of a former prison.
