The Governor of California, Mr Gray Davis said last night that law enforcement officials have "credible evidence" that terrorists may be targeting four California bridges, including the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge

Citing information he said came from several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Davis said terrorists were plotting a rush-hour attack on the Golden Gate Bridge or Bay Bridge, both in San Francisco, the Vincent Thomas Bridge at the Port of Los Angeles, or the Coronado Bridge in San Diego.

He said attacks were planned between tomorrow and November 9th.

Security around the bridges has been heightened and involves personnel ranging from the US Coast Guard to the California Highway Patrol.

"The best preparation is to let terrorists know, we know what you're up to, we're ready for you," Mr Davis said.

The FBI, however, said it had not yet corroborated the information but decided to issue a warning to law enforcement agencies in California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Montana and Idaho about possible attacks on the west coast of the US.
