The Irish Bankers Federation has welcomed draft legislation to update the Asset Covered Securities Act 2001 that was published today by the Minister for Finance.

The existing legislation established a covered bonds market in Ireland, and the proposed changes are to take account of new EU provisions for this sector.

The covered bond market involves pooling assets - such as residential mortgages or public sector loans - and issuing bonds against these groups of assets.
