THE removal ceremony for Veronica Guerin was attended by representatives of the Government, the Garda, Army, political parties, journalists' organisations, RTE and the Dublin newspapers.

The chief mourners were Ms Guerin's husband, Mr Graham Turley, and son, Cathal, Ms Guerin's mother, Bernadette, her brothers, Jimmy and Martin, her sisters, Ms Clare O'Brien and Ms "Maire Therese Branagan, her brothers-in-law, Mr Jim O'Brien and Mr Raymond Branagan, sisters-in-law, Loann and Ruth, Mr Turley's mother, Irene, and his sister, Susan.

The Minister for Justice, Mrs, Owen, and the Minister for Education, Ms Breathnach, represented the Government.

The Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Desmond Connell, was represented by the Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin, Dr Fiacra O Ceallaigh.

Political representatives included the leader of Fianna Fail, Mr Bertie Ahern, the party's chief whip, Mr Dermot Ahern, and its leader in the Seanad, Mr G.V. Wright.

Other TDs present were Dr Rory O'Hanlon, Mr Ray Burke, Mr John O'Donoghue, Mr Sean Haughey, Mr Seymour Crawford, Ms Frances Fitzgerald, Ms Roisin Shortall Mr Joe Costello, Ms Liz O'Donnell, Mr Michael McDowell and Mr Tony Gregory.

Senators present - included Mr Feargal Quinn and Mr Dick Roche.

The Army Chief-of-Staff, Lieut Gen Gerard McMahon, was represented by Comdt John Gleeson. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Pat Byrne, represented the Garda Commissioner, Mr Patrick Culligan. Assistant Commissioners, Mr Pat O'TOOLE and Mr Jim McHugh, were present, as was the head of the Garda Press Office, Supt Bryan O'Higgins.

The director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Eamon Barnes, was present, as was the Secretary of the Department of Justice, Mr Tim Dalton.

The editor of The Irish Times Mr Conor Brady, was represented by Dr David Nowlan, managing editor.

Independent Newspapers wash represented by its chairman, Dr, Tony O'Reilly. The editor of Ms Guerin's newspaper, the Sunday Independent, Mr Aengus Fanning, was present, as was the Independent group chief executive, Mr Liam Healy, and the managing director of Independent Newspapers (Ireland), Mr David Palmer.

The Sunday Tribune was represented by its chairman, Mr Gordon Colleary, and the Sunday World by its chairman, Mr Gerry McGuinness.

RTE was represented by its director of news, Mr Joe Mulholland.

The National Union of Journalists was represented by its Irish secretary Mr Eoin Roynane, with the president of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, Mr Kieran Clancy.

Also at the service were Ms Maureen Haughey and Mr Ciara Haughey. Garda John McCabe, son of the late Det Garda Jerry McCabe, was present.

Journalists present included Mr Sean O'Rourke, of RTE, the editor of the Sunday Tribune, Mr Peter Murtagh, and the Guardian journalist, Maggie O'Kane. Broadcasters John Bowman and Joe Duffy were also present.

A large number of journalists were present from The Irish Times, Independent Newspapers, the Star, the Sunday World, the Sunday Tribune and other publications, as well as from RTE.
