Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of the club's tough Premiership trip to Leeds after incurring a painful hip injury in England's Euro 2004 qualifier against Macedonia.

Gerrard, who limped off after less than an hour of the 2-2 draw in Southampton, is also doubtful for next week's trip to Russia, where Liverpool are due to face Spartak Moscow in a crucial Champions League tie on Tuesday.

Emile Heskey is also doubtful for both matches after withdrawing from the England squad with a groin injury.

"We are paying a heavy price for our service to the national sides," Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier said.

"Steve is definitely out of the Leeds game. I don't know if he will make the Moscow trip.

"He suffered a blow to the muscle, not a tear or a strain, which is good news.

"He has a clot on the hip and that restricts his movement. It will take a time to disperse."
