German prosecutors detained five suspected Islamists who they saymay have been planning an attack in Germany to coincide with thestart of the US-led military campaign against Iraq.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement they wereinvestigating the five unnamed persons on suspicion of formingan "Islamist terrorist association" with the aim of recruitingArab students and planning bomb attacks in Germany."

"There are indications that the suspects possibly would usethe beginning of the war in Iraq as an opportunity to carry outan attack," the statement said, adding that was why prosecutorshad searched six buildings in Berlin today, including theAl-Nur mosque and offices of the Islamic Community in Berlin.
