GARDAI are looking for the driver of a car that hit a cyclist early yesterday morning, after the woman later died. The accident happened at 12.30 a.m. on the Muckross Road near Killarney, Co Kerry.

The woman, who was in her 20s, was taken to Tralee General Hospital. She was named as Karen Fogarty of Mangerton Road, Killarney.

Meanwhile, gardai reported yesterday that a man fell from a bridge over the River Suir at Waterford on Sunday afternoon. He was seen by people in boats on the river, but attempts to rescue him failed.

On Saturday, a man and woman survived without injury when their light aircraft crashed in the Blessington area of Co Wicklow. The engine of the Piper Cub aircraft cut out, according to gardai, but the pilot remained calm and attempted to land.

The plane flipped over on landing at Mullaghcleevaun, near the town of Lacken. An emergency call made by a passerby on a mobile phone was cut off before gardai could get all the details, but Blessington gardai and the Air Corps Alouette from Baldonnel went to the scene. Both people were taken to Baldonnel.

Earlier on Saturday, a man in his 40s was airlifted to Castlebar Hospital in Co Mayo after falling over a cliff in Achill. A Dauphin helicopter from Finner in Donegal went to the scene, along with the Achill Irish Marine Emergency Service unit. The man wounded his leg and was in shock.

On Saturday evening, the Youghal inshore lifeboat went to Whiting Bay outside Youghal, Co Cork, where a yacht was trapped after its propeller caught in lobster pots.

And at around 8.30 p.m. a man and his son were rescued off Clogher Head, Co Louth, after their canoe capsized. In circumstances similar to the plane crash, an emergency call was made on a mobile phone, and was again cut off before all the information was given. The Clogher Head lifeboat went to the scene, but the two had been picked up by a passing motorboat and were uninjured.

In Dublin, gardai named the man found drowned in the Royal Canal early on Saturday morning. He was Alan Fitzgerald (20), from Annamoe Drive, Cabra. He was found at Binn's Bridge and had been in the water for around two hours.
