Gardaí in Drogheda, Co Louth, were last night continuing house-to-house inquiries as part of their investigation into the fatal stabbing of a 32-year-old Romanian man in the town on Friday night.
The man was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital shortly after 11pm on Friday after he was found lying in the front garden of his home in the Brookville estate. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The man's body was discovered lying behind the garden hedge by a friend, who also lived in the house and was returning from work.
The friend noticed the prone figure as he was reversing his car into the driveway and immediately alerted the emergency services.
Gardaí preserved the scene for forensic examination and a postmortem examination carried out on Saturday afternoon found that the man died after being stabbed. Gardaí were last night trying to establish a motive, but said they were following a "certain line" of inquiry.
Door-to-door inquiries were continuing throughout the estate last night.
An incident room has been set up at Drogheda Garda station and gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the stabbing to come forward.
