Gardaí are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting of a man in Dublin early this morning.

A lone gunman broke into a house at Ballyfermot Parade in the west of the city at around 5am and singled out a 22-year-old man, who is believed to have been from the area. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was named locally as Martin Kenny.

Two other people were in the house at the time, the victim's girlfriend and her 14-year-old brother, neither of whom were injured.

The killer, who was masked, fled the scene on foot. He was wearing a black bomber-style jacket and a balaclava.

No motive has been established for the attack. Gardaí have said the victim, who worked as a bricklayer was not known to them.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out today.

The scene has been sealed off for forensic examination.
