Gardaí are still investigating a road race in which two Traveller men raced sulkies in heavy traffic on the main Cork city to Mallow Road last Saturday morning.

The race, which was filmed and subsequently posted on YouTube, has been viewed by over 25,000 people since it was uploaded on May 6th.

One man has been arrested in the case and further arrests are expected.

The footage shows a Garda car driving at speed on the road ahead, with its lights and sirens on.

However the racers, and other vehicles, do not stop immediately.

Instead, the footage shows a number of near misses as the riders, and the vehicle in which the man recording the footage is travelling, narrowly avoid oncoming traffic. Several oncoming vehicles are forced onto the hard shoulder to avoid the riders.

A spokesman for Pavee Point, the Traveller resource centre, described the incident as "completely unacceptable and a potentially catastrophic misuse of a public road".
