The girl, who is from Enniscorthy, is understood to be five months pregnant. She is believed to have discovered her pregnancy recently when she fell ill at school and informed her teacher.

The teacher informed gardaí.

The man is being investigated in relation to a number of counts of alleged sexual assault.

He is not believed to be a relative of the girl's family.

Gardaí say their investigation into the allegations are continuing.

"Once completed, a file will be prepared and sent to the DPP," a Garda spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Health Service Executive (HSE) declined to comment.

"In the interest of confidentiality and compliance to terms of the Childcare Acts, the Health Service Executive does not discuss details pertaining to any existing or potential clients," a HSE spokesman said.

News of the allegations and the continuing Garda investigation have been circulating in the Enniscorthy area for a number of days.

One Garda source in the town said last night that people in Enniscorthy had been "shocked" by the reports of the young girl's pregnancy.
