The I Garda has moved most of its undercover and specialist armed units to the Border area to support the major investigation into the group that carried out Saturday's bombing in Omagh.

Leave has been cancelled for members of both the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and the Surveillance Unit. These have been involved in operations against the dissident republican group.

The specialist units have been moved north to assist the investigations which are being led from an incident room in Carrickmacross Garda Station. The car used in the bomb attack was stolen in the town six days ago.

The Garda operation is being led by the two Divisional Commanders whose areas cover the Border area, Assistant Commissioners Tony Hickey and Kevin Carty.

It is also understood that there has been a high level of cross-Border contact with the RUC, which has also poured resources into the Task Force which was set up two days ago, headed by the acting Assistant Chief Constable, Eric Anderson. The RUC has based its operations in Omagh.

The RUC is still questioning five men arrested in the Omagh area on Monday. They can be held for another five days for questioning, under UK anti-terrorist laws, before being released or charged.

Gardai in Dundalk had already been involved in a search operation for explosives held by the dissident IRA group which carried out the attack. As part of this operation a man was arrested in Dundalk on Monday but gardai said he was not suspected of being involved in the Omagh bombing.

While there has been no indication of any finds or arrests in the Border area, gardai are confident there will be arrests.

The search underway in Dundalk follows an incident north of the town on August 6th, when there was an explosion in an isolated mountainous part of the Cooley Peninsula near Omeath. The explosion was inside Northern Ireland and the RUC have been carrying out forensic tests to determine what happened. It is thought that the dissident republicans might have been test-firing explosives.
