The PSNI are investigating a paramilitary-style punishment shooting on a Louth man in south Armagh last night.

The man, in his mid-twenties, was approached by three or four men wearing balaclavas in Monasterboice, Co Louth, at around 10.00 p.m. last night. One of the men was armed with a handgun.

The men ordered the man into a back of a van where they told him he was to be taken to south Armagh.

The man said he was beaten in the van during the journey and then shot in both legs when the van stopped at Jonesboro in Armagh.

After being left at Jonesboro, the man managed to make contact with a friend who subsequently brought him back over the border to Dromad garda staion in Co Louth.

He is being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and his injuries are not said to be life-threatening. The PSNI have appealed to anyone with information to contact the police in Newry.
