A newly appointed city-centre co-ordinator for Galway has called for the introduction of 24 additional gardai to increase security on the city's streets.

Mr Michael Heneghan, who was recently appointed by the Heart of Galway traders' group, said the city needed to protect and develop its reputation as a safe and vibrant place.
