Merit Medical Ireland is to create 230 jobs at its Galway factory over the next five years as part of an investment worth over €9.3 million.

Merit develops and manufactures medical products for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The new investment will more than double the existing workforce of 179 people. IDA Ireland is supporting the investment and will contribute between €2.3 million to €2.75 million. This works out at once off payment of between €10,000 to €12,000 per job.

The company has being operating in Galway since 1996. In a statement today the company said one in five of the new jobs would be for graduates.

An extension to the current factory is already under construction. Once the investment is complete the company's premises will have grown from

27,000 sq. ft. to 67,000 sq. ft.

Welcoming the announcement the Tánaiste said: "This is a significant endorsement of the Galway facility and will further enhance its value and strategic importance within its parent group.

"It will increase Merit's already important contribution to Galway and surrounding area through the provision of new employment and its increased spending in the local economy.

"This investment will further enhance the reputation of the region as a 'cluster' location for global medical technology companies."

The Parent company Merit Medical Systems is based in Salt Lake City. It employs 1,200 people.
