A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of the murder and rape of 17-year-old Connemara schoolgirl Siobhan Hynes in December 1998.

John McDonagh, of Carraroe, Co Galway was found guilty by a unanimous verdict in the Central Criminal Court this morning. Mr Justice Patrick Smith imposed a life sentence after the jury made its decision after a two-daydeliberation.

Mr Justice Smith adjourned sentencing on the rape charge until July 23rd.

Ms Hynes fully clothed body was found on rocks beside a beach at Tismeáin by a man walking his dogs shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 7th 1998.
