A Galway teenager who went on the run more than two years ago after being charged over a fatal car crash is being extradited back to Ireland from Britain.

David Naughton, 18, is wanted to stand trial on charges relating to a road accident in Carrigaholt, Co Clare in October 2003 which claimed the lives of two young girls.

Lorna Mahoney, 13, and Stacy Haugh, 16, both from Kilkee were killed in the crash.

Mr Naughton, who was 16 years of age at the time of the trial, is expected to appear before the District Court in Kilrush tomorrow where he will face two charges of dangerous driving causing death and having no driving licence or insurance.

The crash occurred in the seaside town on October 17, 2003 when the car lost control and ploughed into the seafront.

Naughton had been living in a voluntary residential care unit in Galway before he disappeared. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest at Ennis District Court in February 2004.

Naughton first appeared in court on October 24, 2003 only a week after the fatal crash. He was remanded in custody to St Patrick's Institution, Dublin but was granted bail at a subsequent hearing.

He disappeared a short while after that and a year after the bench warrant was issued English police confirmed to gardaí that he was in their jurisdiction.

Gardaí then began moves to have Naughton returned to Ireland under a European Arrest Warrant, a quicker method than older and more complex extradition procedures.

He is due to arrive in Shannon Airport at around 9pm tonight where he will be formally arrested.
