FTSE marches on as Dow Jones surges

Those making strong progress included supermarket giant Tesco, which rose 3.75p to 248.5p after it announced another strong set of trading figures.

Spurred on by strong growth in its clothing division, Tesco posted a gain of 14. per cent in British sales in the 14 weeks to November 15th, a rise of 6.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis.

Outside the top flight, bank note printer De La Rue surged almost 9 per cent or 23.25p to 288p after it forecast a strong second half of its financial year and said interim profits had nudged ahead to £19.7 million sterling.

There was no such progress for support services group Jarvis, which fell nearly 6 per cent or 13p to 221p following the announcement of Paris Moayedi's departure as executive chairman.

The share price fall came despite a sharp rise in both turnover and profits at the half-year stage.
