Industrial production fell 1.1 per cent from the previous month, national statistics office INSEE said. That compared with expectations for a 0.5 per cent decline, according to a consensus forecast from economists polled by Reuters.

The August figure was revised down to show a flat figure rather than the previously reported 0.3 per cent rise.

The September trade deficit came in at €3.083 billion, compared with expectations for a deficit of €3.0 billion.
