France lifted a series of disinfectant barriers on its eastern border today after Belgium announced that fears it had been affected by the foot-and-mouth virus had been unfounded.

Officials said that they "judged that keeping the measures on border crossings for disinfecting vehicles were no longer necessary."

But French authorities said that similar measures introduced last weekend near Strasbourg on the German border would stay in place until further notice.

Any vehicles carrying meat, animal carcasses or other animal produce has to pass through the disinfectant baths as a precautionary measure against the spread of the disease which has been reported at over 100 sites in Britain, but as yet at no sites in France.
