Fourteen men and women appeared at Belfast Magistrate's Court today charged in connection with street disorder in Ardoyne in July.

The defendants were charged with causing an affray on July 12th and 13th and were remanded on bail for two months.

In the dock at the Magistrates Court were Mr Hugh Black (27), from New Lodge Road, Mr Joseph Callaghan (47), Beechmount Close, Ms Sarah Drummond (38) Jamaica Road, twins Ms Deirdre Hughes (38) Crumlin Road and Ms Yvonne Hughes, Ardoyne Road, Mr Patrick Johnston (46) Carlisle Road, Mr Gerard Lagan (17) Butler Walk, Mr Michael McGurk (23) Brompton Park, Mr Gerard Smyth (40) Brompton Park, Mr Thomas Turley (18) Holmdene Gardens and Mr James Whelan (42) Brompton Park.

Mr Sean Marley (28) Havana Gardens, was also charged with possessing a plank of wood as an offensive weapon.

Mr Andrew Pettigrew (35) of Cranbrook Court, did not appear to answer a charge of causing an affray and was remanded for a week in his absence.

Mr Patrick Bradley (34) of Northwick Drive, was charged with causing an affray on July 26th. Like the others he was remanded until November 20th.

Defence solicitors said their clients were denying the charges and Mr Kevin Winters said they needed to view the extensive video footage taken by police.
