The awards make their return this year after Hollywood’s writers’ dispute cancelled last year’s ceremony - a brief news conference where winners were announced from a podium was held instead.

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are both nominated as best actor in the film (comedy or musical) category for In Bruges.They face competition from Dustin Hoffman ( Last Chance Harvey), James Franco ( Pineapple Express) and Javier Bardem ( Vicky Cristina Barcelona).

The nominees for best actor in a TV drama series include Gabriel Byrne ( In Treatment) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers ( The Tudors). Shortlisted in the same category are John Hamm ( Mad Men), Hugh Laurie ( House) and Michael C Hall ( Dexter).

Other nominees include Angelina Jolie for Changelingand partner Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button; co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet for Revolutionary Road; Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder; and Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married.

Presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes are seen as a strong indicator of the Oscar nominations that follow in January.
