Nora Herlihy, a key figure in the founding of the Irish Credit Union movement, is to be honoured at a commemorative conference on the role of rural women in recessionary times, which takes place in her native north Cork tomorrow.

Organised by IRD Duhallow Women’s Forum, the conference will mark the centenary of Ms Herlihy’s birth in Ballydesmond and will look at her legacy of co-operative leadership. This led her and others to introduce the credit union movement to Ireland in 1958.
