A former White House staffer who served under the assassinated US president John F Kennedy is to give a major speech in Belfast next week.

Dan Fenn, who was also the founding director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, will give the inaugural JFK Memorial Lecture at Queen’s University.

Mr Fenn, who now helps develop future political talent at the Harvard John F Kennedy School of Government,  is also set to loan artefacts linked to Kennedy to Queen’s University and the gesture has sparked calls for a more permanent memorial in Belfast to the memory of JFK.

Chris Johnston, one of the event organisters, said the memorial would be dedicated to the legacy of Kennedy, the 35th US president.

“The values and ideals of JFK such as civic-mindedness, vision, pragmatism and tenacity in identifying and addressing public challenges are as relevant today in Northern Ireland as they were for the American people during Kennedy’s life,” he said.

Mr Fenn will make his speech at Queen’s on September 2nd.
